Help engineers understand process faults

We are an early-stage EPFL spin-off based in Lausanne, working on AI that tells plant engineers what is going wrong, where, and why — before production is impacted.

Working at KIIO

What we work on

Real plant data We work with industrial datasets that include data gaps, sensor dropouts, noise and irregular sampling.
Process diagnosis We model relationships between process variables to find where faults start and estimate their severity.
Useful to engineers Process and maintenance engineers need to understand a diagnosis and the evidence behind it before acting on it.

The role

This role is funded through our Innosuisse innovation project with EPFL and the Swiss AI Lab (IDSIA). You will develop models that explain industrial process faults and estimate their location and severity, including faults absent from the training data.

You will be employed at IDSIA in Lugano, in the Graph Machine Learning Group led by Prof. Cesare Alippi. You will also work closely with the KIIO team at EPFL and the Automatic Control Laboratory led by Prof. Colin Jones.

What you will work on

  • Develop our graph and time-series models, and benchmark and validate them on industrial datasets.
  • Improve how the models explain faults, estimate severity and report uncertainty.
  • Build models that capture plant dynamics and scale from individual processes to whole plants.
  • Bring validated research into the product, helping engineers detect faults before they disrupt production.

What we look for

  • Ideally a PhD in a related field.
  • A strong background in graph machine learning and time-series learning for physical or industrial systems, or in dynamical systems, system identification and control. Experience in both areas is ideal; depth in either is welcome.
  • An interest in research and in making models work in industrial operations.
